The Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA) has stressed the need to encourage girls to excel in science subjects, as women are often labeled as failures in these fields.

FAWEMA Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Thokozani Phiri, made the remarks on Friday at Matamangwe Primary School in Nkhotakota district, during an event organized by the organization to commemorate the International Day for Women and Girls in Science.

During the event, it came to light that many girls struggle with science subjects due to inadequate support from parents and guardians, as well as self-doubt and unsuitable learning environments.

Responding to the challenges raised, Phiri pointed out that among others, the organization is collaborating with various youth networks in the district through Kuyenda Project as well as involving relevant stakeholders to address the identified issues.

Willard Magunda, Nkhotakota District Principal Education Officer, described the event as an eye opener to the district to mobilizing stakeholders to support and encourage girls in pursuing science education.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, usually observed on 11 February, this year focused on the theme “Closing the Gender Gap, Accelerating Ethics.” FAWEMA organized the event with funding from Oxfam Ibis through Education Out Loud.
