FAWEMA Signs K22million MoU with Ntchisi Schools

On Friday, April 10, 2026, FAWEMA signed K22million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 11 primary schools in Kayoyo Zone, Ntchisi District towards the renovation of classrooms in the respective schools.
The signing ceremony took place at Ntchisi District Education Office, attended by FAWEMA Executive Director Mr Wesley Chabwera and district education officials, head teachers and representatives from beneficiary communities.
The intervention, under Let’s Read Ntchisi project which FAWEMA is implementing in the district with funding from the Canadian Organization for Development through Education (CODE), will help ensure that classrooms are secure, enhancing the safety of books and various teaching and learning materials.
Mr Chabwera said the intervention responds to persistent literacy gaps, where only 17 percent to 24 percent of learners achieve expected reading competencies by Standard four.
“This intervention is meant to create a conducive learning environment while strengthening reading competencies through provision of learning materials, trained teachers, and structured literacy support,” he said, adding:
“We are committed to ensuring that no learner is left behind, and this programme is designed to deliver measurable improvements in reading outcomes across Kayoyo Zone.”
Ntchisi District Director of Education and Sports Shadreck Chakwawa said renovating the classrooms would significantly improve learning conditions at the 11 schools.
“FAWEMA recently bought 4,400 supplementary readers books which were distributed across the 11 schools and, therefore, there is need to secure these classrooms to make the learning materials safe for the good use of our children,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary schools, School Management Committee Chairperson for Mutuwanjovu Primary School, Mizuyawo Chiyembekezo said the funds would be put to proper use.
He thanked CODE through FAWEMA saying, through the Let’s Read Ntchisi project, 22 auxiliary teachers had been recruited and distributed across the 11 schools to improve the teacher-pupil ratio and strengthen literacy instruction in early grades.
The “Let’s Read Ntchisi Project” is a two-year intervention targeting 11 schools in Kayoyo Zone, including Bunda, Chasembe, Chikhalo, Kawombe, Kanolo, Mutuwanjovu and other primary schools, aimed at improving literacy outcomes and sustaining reading culture among learners.
