Tiyeni Tiwerenge: Boosting Reading in Ntchisi

In partnership with CODE and the Ministry of Education, FAWEMA is implementing the Tiyeni Tiwerenge [Let’s Read Ntchisi] project to strengthen literacy skills among standard three and four learners in Kayoyo Zone, Ntchisi District.

The project equips teachers with practical strategies to apply their pedagogical skills, knowledge, and experience in ways that respond to diverse classroom contexts and the specific needs of learners.

To complement the Ministry of Education’s efforts in reducing teacher-pupil ratio, the project has recruited 20 auxiliary teachers to meet the 1:60 teacher-pupil ratio.

In December 2025, the project conducted its first teacher training for school leadership, involving headteachers, deputy headteachers, junior section heads and all standard three and four teachers.

This was a three-day training workshop which focused on creation of a print rich environment and how to build teachers capacity at school level through Coaching and Teacher Learning Circles (TLC).

And, recently, the project procured and distributed textbooks to all standard three and four learners in the target schools.

To ensure that the learning materials are used effectively and sustainably, teachers and community members are sensitized to best practices for caring for books and resources. This helps extend the lifespan of materials and ensures that more pupils benefit from them.

In these photos, parents of learners at Bunda Primary School in the district are actively engaged in sessions on how to take care of books, demonstrating the project’s commitment to community involvement and shared responsibility in supporting children’s education.
