With funding from DFID through Save the Children, FAWEMA from October 2014 to June 2018 implemented a project called Keeping Girls in School – Cash Transfer.  The project was implemented in 10 districts, but FAWEMA managed 3 districts namely Salima, Lilongwe, and Mchinji. The aim of the project Incentivize families and to help them to meet direct and indirect education-related costs that may have otherwise been a barrier to girls staying in school. Cash transfers were made through Airtel money to the guardians of vulnerable girls in upper primary. The money was used to buy other school necessities like school uniforms, learning materials, school bags, school shoes, and other things. During the whole project period, FAWEMA supported 21,732 girls in the three districts of Salima, Mchinji, and Lilongwe. The project registered the following successes:

  • School retention for girls in upper classes improved by 5% by the end of the project.
  • School attendance of girls also improved.
  • Class performance of girls improved.
  • Transitioning of girls into secondary school because of this project.
